These days we
have been confronted with the new PR offensive from the Holy See directed at the
openness of the Vatican’s procedures and location of the Conclavists. An extensive press conference as a novum. Three
press officers , a slight uneasiness in their demeanor, but did then their
upper best to give information on the coming and goings in the next few weeks. There
was Even a film giving a view of the rooms where the cardinals would spend
their stay in Rome. Unfortunately without music or subtitles. Rooms that in the
bareness of their contents would certainly keep the Conclave as short as
possible.
Very kind of the Vatican to use eminent multilingual members of the church. For good order at the table there was a South American a North American and a North Italian. Possibly a foretaste giving a picture of the possible origin of the new Pope.
Meanwhile the Cardinals will be put in a prisoners dilemma to choose the next Pope. Apart from the fact that they are shut in they will be confronted with a number of challenges. First to decide from which continent to choose. Second to decide if the (conservative) line of the former Pope has to be extended. Third to weigh the church interest against the number of believers in the different continents. And last but not least be completely sure that the chosen Cardinal is a person of perfect standing with absolutely no past and present blemishes that could be detrimental to the Papacy.
In regard to the first three a Cardinal from the South Americas could be a reasonable good bet. i.e. not being a Vatican dweller and having a large flock behind him. Second runner up could be a Cardinal out of the African Continent. Something new. Third is to remain conservative and go for an Italian. As to the fourth question/hurdle it will ask for deep soul-searching behind closed doors.
And for those who would like the Vatican to take a step forward..
